have become popular in a variety of creative design styles and where they are being inked on the body. Through out history Bows have been used in a variety of different ways and have different meaning and symbolism.
In dictionary a bow is defined as “any separate piece of looped, knotted, or shaped gathering of ribbon, cloth, paper, etc., used as a decoration, as on a package, dress, or the like.”

A popular daily example is in the tying of show laces. Bows have been used on presents, to fancy things up, and it now has become a symbol of recognition as a gift.

Some popular cultural uses for bows:

  • To remind you of something, a saying “time a string around your finger”, was then tied and used a a bow
  • “Forget me not knot,” which has served as a reminder to leave the past behind.
  • Honoring and waiting for a loved ones return, is visually displayed by using yellow ribbons around “trees”
  • Bows to some symbolize a life accomplishment and set as a reminder of how fragile life can be should it untie

Bows have been used from subtle to prominently in woman’s  fashion, from head to the toes.  The Bow tie still remains popular in mens’ formal wear.


Pink Ribbon and bow tattoos are being displayed by women, perhaps as a sign of a fight against breast cancer or a way to support friends and loved ones in the fight against breast cancer.

Traditional skull tattoos are now being seen with a feminine twist with a bow incorporated into the unique design.

Hell Kitty is a growing popular design tattoo that often is designed with a thick, richly colored bow accent.

The uniqueness of  bow tattoos, showing up in many different tattoo art forms is continuing  in the feminine appeal and touch.
