Tattoo Risks

Tattoos can be done with little to no risk at all, however some tattoos can result in a bad outcome.  Regardless of how safe you are and how safe the artist is, there are still some risks involved when getting your tattoo. Don’t let a tattoo artist tell you that there are no risks involved because this is simply not the case.

The largest concern for safety to the person receiving the tattoo is whether the equipment is sanitary. If the tattoo artist hasn’t cleaned and disinfected the equipment after each and every use, then the risk of passing an infection or disease is greater. You could easily wind up getting a serious skin disease or infection if the equipment has not been sterilized properly. Also notice the cleanliness of the tattoo parlor itself. Tattoo parlors do receive a lot of visitors and the studio should be cleaned on a daily basis to prevent dirty equipment and germs from multiplying.

If you notice any type of redness around your tattoo or any swelling in the area, you need to visit your doctor immediately. It could be that your tattoo has become infected and your doctor can prescribe you medication for the treatment of this infection. If however the infection is severe the doctor could admit you to the hospital for further treatment. In the most severe cases you could end up having to have surgery to remove the tattoo to prevent further infection. Naturally surgery has their own set of risks as well.

If your doctor recommends that you have surgery to remove the tattoo then this can be done as an out patient surgery or you may have to have a hospital stay for a brief period of time. The doctor or surgeon will be the one to determine if it requires removal. They will base this on your overall health and the chances of developing infection. Just remember that tattoo removal is under Doctor care and often times the patients are given meds that will prevent any type of pain, besides the meds they will receive to treat the infection.

Besides the health risks involved the next biggest issue is the overall appearance of the tattoo itself. Most tattoos that are done by an non professional will not be done well and could easily result in a ruined tattoo appearance. Remember this is something that will be with you for the rest of your life and naturally you will want the appearance to be nice and not ugly. If you do ever have to have a tattoo removed, or opt to have one removed, often times they will leave a scar. This scar will fade away somewhat over time as years go by but will never completely disappear. You will always have a permanent reminder of where it was.

If you are considering getting a tattoo in the future, visit and examine the parlors you are considering using, to make sure that they are clean. As well, while there ask questions and check to see that the tattoo artists clean the equipment after use. In other words take the time to “hang out” at a parlor and get to know the business and how clean they are. A lot can be said about a clean tattoo parlor. If they take the time to make sure it is clean and well kept and that the equipment they use is cleaned and free of germs as well.

If you are considering getting a tattoo then like everything else you do in your life you need to consider such things as:

  • why your getting it
  • how you think you will feel about it as you get older
  • can picture yourself with that tattoo in years to come?

After all a tattoo is permanent and will become part of your body, so think carefully about getting one and don’t do it just because you simply “like them”.
